Isn't it fascinating how simple the world seems to little people? I marvel at this often as I have little conversations with my now 3 year old.
Yesterday afternoon we were driving home from creche and Courtney was "reading" a book. She asked me to look at something in the book and I gave her my standard response: "I can't look now, I'm busy driving."
It was then that I decided to elaborate hoping that maybe she'd get the idea and stop asking me every minute or so to have a look in her book. I told her that I can't look because I'm driving and I need to watch the road and the other cars on the road otherwise I will crash the car and then "my children will get eina".
To this she promptly told me that if the car crashes then Courtney and Keegan will break! (Where she gets this stuff from, I have no idea). So I said "Yes, that's right."
This did not seem to be much of a problem for her because she just told me that if Keegan breaks we can build a new Keegan... Well, I was blown away by this response because it was not at all what I expected. I proceeded to tell Courtney that I don't want to build another Keegan and another Courtney because I only love the Keegan and Courtney who are in the car. Of course, this was a concept that she could not grasp at all because she started becoming very excited about the prospect of new Courtneys and Keegans. She was talking about making and building yellow Courtneys and green Keegans... Imagine....
It got me thinking that life seems so simple for a little person - if something breaks, just replace it with something else. Imagine of it really were that simple. They have so much to learn in the coming years, it's sad in many ways that their innocence will be gone before long.
I guess it has just taught me a little bit more about living in the moment and accepting things as they are right now. It doesn't really enhance our lives to think about the technicality of things and to worry about events that have not actually happened.
So, for today (at least), I will try to embrace the present and make my life as simple as it needs to be in order to enjoy it most.
